Working out is a pain

Question

After a workout at the gym I feel quite dizzy. I've also found that my stomach muscles get sore really quickly. I've only just started going to the gym and wondered if this could be doing me any damage?

Answer

It's great you've started going to the gym as regular exercise is very beneficial for both your physical and mental health. When you start a new fitness routine it's important to not do too much at once because you could strain your muscles or injure yourself in other ways. It sounds as though the pain in your stomach muscles could be a result of overworking yourself. If the pain continues, you might want to go to see your doctor (GP), or you could contact NHS Direct on 0845 4647 for medical advice.

You should start gradually and build up your workout, rather than throwing yourself into a heavy routine straight away. You might want to speak to the instructors at the gym who can help you work out a suitable plan and ensure you are using the equipment properly. They can also show you how to warm up and warm down before and after exercising, which can help prevent muscles from being strained.

After a normal workout, you should feel energised rather than dizzy, You should make sure you are drinking plenty of water when you work out to keep you hydrated and try to eat something a couple of hours before you go to the gym. A yoghurt and a piece of fruit, or some toast and jam, will help give you enough energy to keep up with your workout.

If you are just staring a new fitness routine it is always a good idea to discuss it with your GP, especially if you have any health problems.
